Conservatives win Harpenden North and Rural by-election

Local Conservatives' Sue Griffiths.

Tory candidate Sue Griffiths has claimed victory in yesterday’s by-election in the ward of Harpenden North and Rural.

She picked up 661 votes, with Lib Dem James Robertson in second place with 546 – an 18.7 per cent increase for the Conservatives.

Green candidate Mario May received 82 votes, while Labour’s Ross Harper was in last place with 51.

A Conservative source said: “Let’s hope now the Liberal Democrats get the message on charging for parking.”
The proposed introduction of fees for on-street parking was at the heart of Sue’s campaign.

The by-election was called following the resignation of Lib Dem councillor Beth Fisher.
