A new charity set up to protect a much-loved area of common land north of Harpenden is appealing for public donations to reach its fundraising target this week.
The Friends of Kinsbourne Green Common was established in September 2023 to enable the local community to purchase the land from the current owners without going to auction as originally planned.
Having negotiated the purchase, they now urgently need to raise the £150,000 needed to buy it. It will then be held by the charity in perpetuity for everyone to enjoy.
The Harpenden Trust is firmly behind the charity and is providing £15,000 towards the purchase, but they are appealing to anyone who enjoys walking on the Common or appreciating the views to help out.
Chair of Trustees Sue Archer said: “We are overwhelmed by the generous pledges and donations received so far, but we are still trying to reach our fundraising target, so please don’t delay in making your donation as our legal deadline for the purchase is January 31 2024 and to progress the purchase with confidence, funds need to be in place this week.
“Your generosity to help secure this much valued land for the local community for evermore will make 2024 an extra special year.”
Kinsbourne Green Common has a long and rich history – allegedly it was gifted by Edward the Confessor – so pre-dates the Norman Conquest.
Future plans are focussed on maintaining its biodiversity, flora and fauna so those who have enjoyed it for so many years are able to continue to do so. The Common is shared with all local residents and the Ninth Harpenden Scouts, St Mary’s Church and Kinsbourne Green Nursery.
