A residential street in Harpenden is currently closed while teams from Affinity Water and Herts Highways work to tackle a sinkhole and burst water main.

The incident kicked off during this morning’s rush hour at around 8.20am, after the hole opened in Park Avenue North.

Road closures have been put in place and Affinity say they are assessing the situation.

Local resident Jessica Frankish, who sent us footage of the hole, said there was a loud sound of running water in the vicinity.

County councillor Matt Cowley said: “I have been made aware of the sinkhole which has appeared in Harpenden this afternoon and I am in contact with the county council in relation to it. It is important that the causes of the sinkhole are addressed fully and safely; but also important that the road is restored to a safe condition as quickly as is practically possible.

“I have made these points to the council and I will continue to follow updates closely.”

A spokesperson for Affinity said: “We are aware of a burst water main and a sinkhole on Park Avenue North in Harpenden.

“The area is safe and has been secured to protect the public. The sinkhole is confined to the road and does not affect nearby properties.

“Park Avenue North is currently closed to through traffic while repair work takes place. Access is maintained from either side, and a short diversion is in place.

“Our teams are on site working to repair the water main and restore the road as quickly and safely as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank residents and road users for their patience while repairs are completed. Further updates will be provided as work progresses. To stay updated, head to: https://www.affinitywater.co.uk/alerts?id=15370“
