John Dowdle, the former Watford councillor who has been the prospective Parliamentary candidate for Reform UK in St Albans since early this year, has stepped down from the role.
In a statement sent to supporters, he said: “I volunteered to take on the role of St Albans constituency spokesperson about nine months ago in response to an appeal from Reform UK for a member to take on the role.
“I subsequently was confirmed as the prospective Parliamentary candidate for the constituency of St Albans.
“However, I always made it clear from the very beginning that if someone else were to come along who would want to take on the role I would be happy to stand aside.
“Someone has now come forward with an interest in being the PPC for St Albans Reform UK Party. So I am standing down so I can assist my colleagues in Reform UK Watford, where I stood in the 2 May 2024 local election as a councillor candidate.
“I hope I have managed to inject some enthusiasm and interest in promoting Reform UK policies and values in the St Albans area in the short time I have had the pleasure and honour of working with you all.
“I am sure you will all want to extend to your new PPC the level of support you have given me, especially as the party nationally and regionally is gearing up for the general election. Onwards and upwards is the way forward with your new PPC!”
His replacement is said to be Sam Woodruff, although no further details about them have been released.
