As the World Cup opens on June 11, something equally powerful will be happening a little closer to home at Oaklands College.
The college is hosting The World Cup Packathon in partnership with Goods For Good — a 12-hour endurance charity event bringing together the Hertfordshire business community for a day themed “Sport for Good”.
The Oaklands Wolves sports hall will be transformed into a global arena, with 48 corporate teams each representing one of the nations competing in the 2026 World Cup. But this time, the competition won’t be on the pitch.
Teams will work side by side to pack thousands of boxes of life-saving humanitarian aid destined for vulnerable communities across the UK and around the world.
For Oaklands College, this event perfectly reflects its commitment to community, opportunity and sporting excellence. Home to the Oaklands Wolves, the college is nationally recognised for helping young people combine academic study with elite-level sport.
The ambition for the day is significant. Organisers aim to raise more than £50,000 to fund global logistics and emergency relief, pack over 4,000 boxes of essential goods in a single day, divert 20,000kg of surplus goods away from landfill and save an estimated 500,000kg of CO₂ equivalent through reuse.
Each team of five will work at a dedicated table dressed in their chosen nation’s colours, committing to raise a minimum of £1,000, with a £500 deposit securing their place.
Beyond the immediate humanitarian impact, the event is designed to deliver real value for participating businesses. As well as hands-on team building, organisations will gain networking opportunities with 47 other regional businesses, brand exposure throughout the event and a detailed post-event ESG impact report quantifying both social value and carbon savings achieved.
Importantly, the day will also have a direct local impact. Funds raised will help support disadvantaged Oaklands Wolves students, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent talented young people from accessing education, sport and development opportunities at Oaklands College.
