St Albans Cathedral is showing the first local screening of the ‘People’s Emergency Briefing’ film which is putting a renewed focus on climate and nature issues.
The screening on Sunday April 19 is being organised by representatives from St Albans Green Action Network, and will be attended by MP Daisy Cooper.
Last November, 10 of the UK’s leading scientists and experts on climate and nature issues, presented a National Emergency Briefing in Westminster to an invited audience of more than 1,200 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media. Subjects included climate science, food security, public health, national security, flooding, heatwaves, nature, infrastructure stress and economic stability.
This film has been produced to ensure that members of the general public get to hear the important messages from the briefing.
The local group organising the screening, St Albans Green Action Network, comprises representatives from various concerned groups in St Albans – including Halo Primary Care Network, St Albans Green Christians, Greenpeace St Albans, The Climate Majority Project SAFER campaign, Jefferson Eco CIC, Sustainable St Albans, St Albans Friends of the Earth, The Green House, Sopwell Community Emergency Planning Partnership, Extinction Rebellion St Albans, St Albans District Fixers and New Greens Wild Garden.
Dr Sarah Dowling, a local GP and clinical director of Halo Primary Care Network said: “This is an important film for all health professionals to see. The health hazards from climate change are escalating so fast that they will impact the health and survival of people alive today – whether it is the increase in heat-related mortality – or food insecurity arising from the increase in droughts and heatwaves. The film gathers the best intelligence we now have, and everyone should have access to this information.”
Ed Jarvis from The Climate Majority SAFER campaign said: “It’s extraordinary to bring all this evidence together in one place and very important that everybody has the opportunity to hear the experts. We all need to understand the risks that the UK is facing now, and to think about the urgent responses needed.
“Importantly the National Emergency Briefing builds on recent suppressed and censored UK Government reports that highlight how our food system as at risk of collapse even as early as 2030. Now is the moment to come together and act!”
Sonya Jefferson, from Jefferson Eco CIC, said: “Our St Albans environmental groups believe that people in St Albans care about the climate and nature crisis, but our general media is not providing the information people need to hear. We are really pleased that the Cathedral has agreed to be the venue for this screening.”
Diocesan environment officer Rachel Johnston added: “Here is the evidence, straight from the experts, that shows that the climate and biodiversity crisis is not something that is happening to somebody else, on the other side of the globe.
“It’s already affecting people here in Britain at the fundamental level of our survival – our water, air, food and national security are already being compromised. And there’s huge injustice in how this is playing out, with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our society being affected first, and worst. But there is still hope if we take action now.
“We must face the facts, understand our responsibilities and work with others in our community to bring about a fairer, more sustainable and just future for everyone.”
After the screening there will be an opportunity for discussion and to engage with local groups offering support and practical ways to help on these issues.
