Legendary St Albans band The Zipheads will be marking the 10th anniversary of their second album by performing it in its entirety at London’s The 100 Club on Saturday November 7.
Initially formed as a punk band around 2005, The Zipheads played only a handful of shows, most of them at The Horn. A few years later, the band members had become more and more enamoured with 1950s rock’n’roll and rockabilly, and The Zipheads were abandoned and reformed as ‘The Runaway Boys’.
Swapping bass guitar for a double bass, The Runaway Boys played high-energy covers of songs of the rock’n’roll greats like Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly, and were incredibly prolific on the St Albans music scene.
They played almost every pub in the city, from the Black Lion to the King Offa, with regular appearances at The Mermaid, Farmer’s Boy, White Swan and The Boot.
After the end of The Runaway Boys in 2010, they decided to focus exclusively on their own material, returning to the original Zipheads moniker, and recruiting drummer Will Bennett, of St Albans ska-punk outfit and Pioneer Club regulars, Kiss My Brass.
Since then, the St Albans trio have released an extensive back catalogue and established themselves as an international touring powerhouse, opening for acts such as Soft Play, Don Broco, The Selecter and Neville Staple, touring with Hayseed Dixie and Reverend Horton Heat, appearing at Boomtown, Shambala and Glastonbury festivals, as well as countless gigs across the UK, Scandinavia and mainland Europe and the USA – and even performing live on early-morning Estonian national TV to an audience of 150,000 viewers.
Now almost exactly a decade since the original London launch of Rampage! in 2016, The Zipheads will be marking their first label release and first album ever pressed to vinyl.
Published by independent label Bomber Music, the album brought them to a wider audience – earning praise for its production and songwriting from many critics, and landing place in Vive Le Rock magazine’s list of Top 50 Albums of 2016.
The 100 Club is itself celebrating 50 years as the birthplace of UK punk, but over the years has also seen performances from legends such as Muddy Waters, The Clash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and The Who.
Ray Waters from the band said: “This will be our biggest headline show to date, after the launch of our third album Rock’n’Roll Renaissance last year to a packed-out show at The Underworld Camden, so don’t miss this one-night only celebration of one of St Albans hardest-working and longest-running bands!”
