It’s spuds and spades at Willows Activity Farm this autumn as the leisure attraction gears up for its annual potato harvest.
The farm, just outside London Colney, is hosting two events to mark the harvest with the Spud-tacular Wild West Adventure taking place on weekends from Saturday September 5 to Sunday September 20 and a dedicated Potato Shindig for preschoolers every weekday morning from Monday September 7 to Friday September 18.
There are 20 tonnes of potatoes – the equivalent of three and a half elephants – ready for harvesting at the farm’s Potato Patch. Visitors can grab a spade and start digging to unearth their potatoes to take home and enjoy.
Weekend potato pickers can also look forward to some frontier fun with cowboy and cowgirl shows throughout the day as well as Wild West-themed arts and crafts to get stuck into.
While at the mornings-only Potato Shindig event preschoolers will be able to enjoy a brand- mnew Peter Rabbit show all about harvest time.
Director Andrew Wolfe said: “Harvest is one of the most important events in the farming calendar, and I’m thrilled we’re able to share it with our guests.
“I’m particularly pleased we’re able to offer a special weekday morning event for our preschoolers and introduce some of our youngest visitors to this key time of the year.”
Farmers at Willows planted the Picasso variety potato in the early spring in readiness for the farm’s autumn event.
Andrew added: “This particular variety is a great all rounder and brilliant mashed, roasted or baked in their skins.”
Every paying child who visits throughout the potato harvest is entitled to a free bag of potatoes.
