Dementia-friendly screenings of classic films are taking place at The Odyssey to provide a gentler and more welcoming cinema experience for those people with the condition and their families.
The screenings include meaningful adjustments, such as low auditorium lighting, no adverts or trailers, and a relaxed environment where people are free to move around. Singing along to familiar musical moments is also welcomed.
Upcoming films are Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on June 25 and Calamity Jane on July 30, and the events are being supported by local company Starling Homecare, which is passionate about supporting not only practical care needs, but also emotional wellbeing, connection, dignity, and quality of life.
Starling managing director Rupen Faldu said: “Together with The Odyssey Cinema, we are delighted to help create a gentle and welcoming space where people with dementia, along with their families and carers, can come together to enjoy familiar moments, feel connected, and simply share time with one another.”
