Scents and sensibility from Abbey Theatre’s latest production

Rehearsals for Parfumerie by the Company of Ten at the Abbey Theatre.

The Company of Ten opens its own Parfumerie on the Main Stage of the Abbey Theatre in November.

With the weather drawing in, what better time to be transported back to Vaci Street, Budapest on a snowy day in 1937 and enter the warmth of Mr Hammerschmidt’s Parfumerie and its fabulous cast of characters.

Bathed in the warm glow of amber, patchouli and oud, this romantic comedy has inspired many adaptations, including the films The Shop Around the Corner with James Stewart and You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

The plot unfolds, in this traditional European Christmas play, as two anonymous pen pals fall in love through their heartfelt letters. As their love grows they discover they may know more about one another than they suspected. Only honesty can lead to a happy resolution in this charming tale of betrayal, intrigue, and romance.

Director Beccy Baird said: “I’ve wanted to direct this play ever since falling in love with the film The Shop Around the Corner, which my family watch every Christmas.

“While we rehearse, the Company of Ten’s passionate and talented backstage teams are building a two-story set, creating full ranges of bespoke products to stock Mr Hammerschmidt’s beautiful shop with and hand-embroidering logos on costumes.

“It’s warm, funny, romantic, and just the thing to cheer up a cold winter’s evening. Indulge yourself in a pre-Christmas treat and join us at the Abbey Theatre for this tale of love and friendship. There will even be snow!”

Performances take place on the Abbey Theatre Main Stage from Friday and Saturday November 10-11 at 8pm

Sunday November 12 at 2.30pm and Tuesday to Saturday November 14-18 at 8pm
