It was a slightly different but no less successful St George’s Day lunch for St Albans District Chamber of Commerce this year – gone were the red and white flags and patriotic singalong, but still evident in abundance was the sense of community which pervades the local business scene.
Held at Sopwell House Hotel, with guests taking full advantage of the sunshine in the gardens after lunch, it saw hundreds of business leaders enjoy a three course meal followed by entertainment from comedian Ben Norris and some unexpected Singing Waiters, plus a raffle and auction in aid of suicide awareness charity The OLLIE Foundation.
Chamber events manager Claire Stevenson said: “We’re thrilled with the success of this year’s St George’s Day Luncheon – it was one to remember. The room was full of energy, with a fantastic atmosphere and a real sense of celebration throughout. The surprise Singing Waiters brought a real moment of fun, and Ben Norris had the audience in stitches. We’re especially proud to have raised funds for The OLLIE Foundation, supporting the vital work they do across our community.”
Recently elected Chamber President Susan Glenholme added: “Another fantastic St Albans District Chamber of Commerce St George’s Day lunch last Friday with entertainment from the very funny comedian, Ben Norris!
“This year was slightly different as it was my first St George’s Day lunch as President of the Chamber! It was a pleasure to host the day, bringing together over 300 of our members and their guests for our flagship event and to see everyone enjoying themselves and building connections – expertly captured by the amazing camera skills of, Stephanie Belton!
“Thank you to Rafael (Rafi) Bejerano FIH MI and the whole Sopwell House team for looking after us so well. And a massive thank you to our sponsors who make this day possible, all raising money for a very worthy cause – The OLLIE Foundation.
“An even bigger thank you to the Chamber team, Claire Stevenson, Emma Fisher and Carol Christou for all their hard work – both in the run-up and on the day – in making this such a brilliant event.
“One of my favourite parts of the day were those singing waiters, serenading Barry Griffin on the Debenhams Ottaway table – well done Barry for being such a great sport!
