As a cornerstone of youth culture in St Albans, The Pioneer Club is offering a variety of different events for young people this March.
Traditional open mic nights can feel intimidating when you’re just starting out, performing in a room full of seasoned musicians isn’t always the easiest first step. That’s why the Young Pioneer’s Open Mic at The Pioneer Club is different. It’s a chilled, welcoming space created specifically for young performers under 18 to gain experience, build confidence and share their music in front of a genuinely supportive crowd.
Doors open at 6:30pm on Wednesday March 18, with performances running from approx 7–10pm. Typically each slot is up to 15 minutes, but if you only want to do one song, that’s fine too! All musical styles are both welcome and encouraged; this is your stage. Previous slots have seen guitar solos, vocalists singing covers to backing tracks, and singer-songwriters and guitarists performing their own original music.
Although the event is free (donations are welcome), guests are encouraged to book a ticket so numbers can be managed. Performers or parents can reserve their slot by emailing events@pioneerclub.co.uk. Please note that under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
One previous performer shared: “It was a wonderful way to share and hear music with others — we really appreciate the kind and supportive environment.”
And a parent said while their daughter had been too daunted to attend a regular open mic night, this event gave her the perfect opportunity to perform and grow in confidence. There’s no pressure, no judgement. Just positive, supportive vibes, and heaps of raw talent!
Just two days later, the energy shifts from acoustic sets in the Suet Yard to dance vibes as the Under 18s Club Night returns for its second edition on Friday March 20.
Celebrating The Pioneer’s roots as a youth club, this night is all about giving local young people a safe, welcoming space to meet friends, dance and have fun. Running from 8.30–11pm for ages 14–17, the evening features a live DJ, with soft drinks and snacks available throughout the night. Tickets are £5 and can be bought here through The Pioneer Club website.
Parents have been quick to praise the night. One shared: “Thank you for putting on such a great night for the local teenagers. They really needed something like that and my daughter had a lovely time.”
At a time when youth-focused events can feel few and far between, these two nights offer something really valuable for local young people of St Albans and beyond — a place to perform, to connect with each other, and to enjoy good music.
