Audiences will be spending Christmas in Narnia courtesy of The Company of Ten’s yuletide theatre production of C S Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The classic tale of good versus evil is set in a land of ice and snow, cruelly ruled over by the White Witch and her assorted dastardly minions. When four siblings discover a secret way into the land through an old wardrobe, the stage is set for a battle to release Narnia from the White Witch who makes the country always winter, but never Christmas.
“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is always a firm favourite with family audiences, and we are very excited to be presenting it as our Christmas show this year,” said director Katherine Barry. “Children particularly identify with Susan, Peter, Lucy and Edmund, who are ordinary children but who achieve amazing things. I’m delighted to be working with a cast – especially the children – who bring the story to life in a way that will really capture the audience.”
The Abbey Theatre stage will be transformed into a magical wintery world. The talents of the workshop team, the wardrobe department (sadly with no secret doorways) and the technical teams will combine to make this a breath-taking show – especially in the realisation of animals, not least the lion Aslan, which promises to be a theatrical coup.
In addition to Aslan, the staging includes fauns, snow, fight scenes and even Father Christmas, making it spectacular fun for all the family.
Performances take place on the Main Stage on Saturday December 16 at 2.30pm and 5.30pm; Sunday December 17 at 2.30pm and 5.30pm; Thursday December 21 at 7.30pm; Friday December 22 at 7.30pm; Saturday December 23 at 2.30pm and 5.30pm; Wednesday December 27 at 2.30pm and 5.30pm; and Thursday December 28 at 2.30pm and 5.30pm.
