Classic comedy Home, I’m Darling opens the Abbey Theatre’s 2026-2027 season

Home I'm Darling at the Abbey Theatre

The Company of Ten brings acclaimed Olivier Award-winning comedy Home, I’m Darling by Laura Wade to the Abbey Theatre this September.

What happens when the perfect 1950s fantasy of married couple Judy and Johnny collides with the reality of life? Judy has transformed her home and herself into an idealised vision of post-war domestic bliss. But behind the Prestige pressure cooker, Pyrex and carefully ironed aprons lies the sadness of a world where appearances are difficult to maintain as she retreats into a past that never was.

Warm, witty and sharply observed, Laura Wade’s play explores love, marriage, identity and the often impossible standards we set ourselves. Home, I’m Darling is an entertaining evening of hilarious comedy and a thoughtful exploration of nostalgia.

Dee Tidy, making her directoral debut, said: “Home, I’m Darling is a very funny play, with serious and poignant undertones as it tells the story of Judy, husband Johnny and her efforts for them to live in the [perfect 1950s marriage/world’. However was it really so perfect ? As well as great one liners, it is this duality that drew me to the play and how in the age of influencer perfection and the trad wife movement, the themes resonate today.”
