As Black History Month 2023 commemorates the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush, the Company of Ten presents Wind/Rush Generation(s), a challenging production which brings us face to face with Britain’s colonial past.
Written by Mojisola Adebayo, specifically for youth theatre groups, the story follows a group of first year history students who are being troubled by a ghostly presence. As a dare, they decide to use a Ouija board to exorcise it, but instead they are led on a rollercoaster ride as they confront this country’s difficult imperial history of racism and prejudice.
Cast member, Mamley Djangmah, plays Ola, who finds her voice as a student leader during the play: ‘It’s so important for the arts to support events like Black History Month. It allows us to tell the stories and experiences of black people, helping to educate, bring awareness and honour our heroes.
“My family is from Accra, the Ga-adangebe tribe of Ghana. I’m currently living in London, but when I heard about this play, I wanted to be a part of it. I think it addresses historical events in an interesting and accessible way for the audience.’
As difficult as the subject matter is to tackle, the script itself is also varied and challenging, taking the audience on a one-hour journey through naturalism, physical theatre, poetry, group prose and direct address.
Co-director, Tina Swain said: ‘We wanted to present this play at the Abbey Theatre because it offers something very different to our audience. But it’s also given us the opportunity to attract a wonderful and diverse young cast who really bring it to life. It isn’t always comfortable viewing, but it speaks to audiences of all ages who want to understand some of the more challenging aspects of our country’s past.’
