Abbey Theatre invites community behind the scenes

A previous open day at the Abbey Theatre.

The Abbey Theatre in St Albans is opening its doors on Saturday September 5, from 10am to 4pm, inviting local people to come along, explore the theatre and discover the many ways they can get involved.

The free Open Day offers visitors the chance to look behind the scenes of the theatre and find out more about the people, skills and creativity that bring its productions to life. From performing and directing to backstage, technical, front-of-house and other opportunities, there are plenty of ways to become part of the theatre community.

“There’s so much more to the theatre than the final production you might come and view. This is the chance to get backstage and really see how the theatre works, from props to wardrobe to how the crew communicate to make sure the shows all work seamlessly,” says chairman, Paul Davidson

The Abbey Theatre was built and is run by its members and has been providing high-quality, affordable theatre for the local community for more than 60 years. Its resident Company of Ten stages a wide range of productions, while the theatre also welcomes visiting groups and other events.

The Open Day is an opportunity for anyone curious about theatre – whether experienced or completely new to it – to meet members, see the venue from a different perspective and discover how they could get involved.

The Abbey Theatre’s 2026/27 season begins later in September, with Home, I’m Darling running from September 18-26.
