Fly-tipped rubbish left strewn around council housing land will be removed within seven days, councillors have pledged.
The decision was made at the recent full council meeting, following pressure from the Labour group after ongoing issues in London Colney.
Fly-tipping at Cotlandswick garages took a month and a half to remove, while rubbish in Five Acres has been there for 13 months.
After a review by council officers, the target time for clearance has now been confirmed as seven working days from the time the request is logged on the council’s system, but if the fly-tip is hazardous waste, the target time is 24 hours.
Leader of the Labour group, Cllr Emma Turnbull said, “We were shocked at the delays in removing fly-tipped waste. The delays were worst in local garage sites, where rubbish can lie around for months!
“We are now arguing for CCTV in problem sites and prosecution of offenders.”
Most hazardous clearances are undertaken by a third party and organised by the waste management team. Large scale waste such as fly-tipping is checked by Environmental Health Officers to try and identify the source and take the appropriate action.
