Eagle-eyed visitors to Greenwood Park in Chiswell Green might have spotted the installation of a row of wooden fencing at the edge of the park.
But thankfully it’s nothing to do with widening the A405 as part of the much-derided rail freight interchange, it’s actually connected to a fairly substantial tree and shrub planting project taking place over the autumn and winter.
St Stephen Parish Council is calling the project the New Wild Edge and the aim is to increase biodiversity, support wildlife habitats and enhance the park’s green space for the whole community to enjoy.
The initiative will involve the planting of more than 2,500 shrubs and trees, and is being supported by local schools, Scouts and Guides. Park users and parish residents will be asked to join in planting sessions.
The project received part funding from Hertfordshire County Council, along with expert advice on suitable species, planting density and layout to maximise environmental benefit.
As well as promoting biodiversity, the new planting will help provide natural soundproofing along the edge of the park, a response to feedback in a parish-wide survey, which highlighted traffic noise from the A405 as a concern. Great news all round then!
