You may be able to purchase the iconic Clock Tower for less than £200, or pick up the Cathedral for a few pounds more when the official St Albans edition of classic board game Monopoly hits stores later this year.
The city has been chosen after beating Hertford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Watford and Welwyn Garden City in a public race for the accolade.
The special edition board will be produced by Winning Moves, under license from Hasbro, and custom games executive Ella Gibbs said: “St Albans came out on top in Hertfordshire based on its pride, stunning landmarks and heritage. We know we’ll be wonderfully spoiled with choices when putting this special edition of the game together.” An official launch of the game took place today outside St Albans Cathedral.
The Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans, added: “St Albans Cathedral is overjoyed at the successful nomination of our city as the location of the next Monopoly game.
“The extraordinary history and vibrancy of this wonderful city will bring this family favourite to life in a new and exciting way.”
The St Albans edition, which comes out in October, will see more than 30 city landmarks and favourite locations showcased on the board, themed in genres, from tourism to heritage, arts to business, entertainment to education, shopping to leisure.
The public is invited to suggest St Albans landmarks to be featured on famous spaces, as well as the language on the Chance and Community Chest cards, either by emailing stalbans@winningmoves.co.uk or via the official Monopoly: St Albans Edition Facebook page. Nominations will be accepted for consideration until 11.59pm on March 10 2024.
