The Friends of Jersey Lane (FoJL) – a community group established in April – fielded its first volunteer working group last week, as part of its aim to conserve the lane’s natural assets, enhance its biodiversity and support the local Green Space Action Plan.
The working group began the process of clearing undergrowth,
weeds and certain non-native, invasive plant species, such as laurel and snowberry, prior to the planting, planned for next month, of 120 small trees and hedging plants donated by Herts county council.
Over time, this work will be extended to cover the length of the lane, which runs between Marshalswick and Sandridge, is much used by walkers and cyclists, and provides important habitats for a wide variety of animal life, including several species of bats and butterflies.
Sue Mayo, a committee member said: “Friends of Jersey Lane is working closely with local residents, the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, Herts and Middlesex Butterfly Conservation, and Herts county council’s Countryside Management Service and Woodland Creative Projects and Land Management Projects.
“It has also been assisted with a grant from Sandridge Parish Council, which will be used to purchase tools, fund the setting up and maintenance of a website, and to enable wildlife and botanical surveys.”
Sue added: “Do get in touch if you would like to join future volunteer working parties. It is good fun and helps in the maintenance of Jersey Lane.”
The group has its own Facebook page and membership of the FoJL is free and open to all.
