St Albans Cathedral is continuing its annual light shows with a celebration of the Renaissance.
Once again working in partnership with artist Peter Walker and Luxmuralis, this year’s event looks at the huge explosion of creativity in knowledge and art which began in the early 1400s.
Different parts of the Cathedral tell the story of this period of history, including the great art of old European masters, the human body as a microcosm of the universe, stained glass at its height between the 12th and 16th centuries, and the rebirth of culture and the coming of the modern age.
Canon Kevin Walton explained: “Starting in Italy, the Renaissance spread throughout Europe. It reached the wealth of learning here at St Albans Abbey and the artistry of those who beautified this building, illuminated so stunningly this week.
“In the Renaissance we celebrate the creative potential of humanity, made, as we read in the Bible, in ‘the image and likeness of God’. Whatever your beliefs, we hope that this journey of light and sound within this wonderful Cathedral will bring you a deeper reflection of what it means to be human.”
