A St Albans social group celebrated its 10th anniversary last weekend with pub drinks and piñatas.
Around 50 people from the ‘Social in St Albans – Millennials’ group marked the milestone birthday in the White Hart Tap pub’s beer garden on Saturday.
Among the festivities were two special piñatas shaped as a ‘1’ and ‘0’ for attendees to have a knock at, while photos from the group’s formative years were shared out.
Several of the group’s early members, who have since moved away from the St Albans area, also travelled over to join the fun and recall their memories.
Social in St Albans was created to provide a friendly environment for people in their 20s and 30s to meet others and try new experiences. Its first event was held in the Blacksmiths Arms, St Peter’s Street on Tuesday September 17 2013.
The group, run through the popular Meetup social platform, has helped create long-running friendships – and even one or two marriages!
It now includes a number of people in the ‘millennial’ age range, stretching from people in their late 20s to early 40s. Events run by the group include regular walks, pub drinks, restaurant trips, badminton games, and craft nights.
Anyone in their 20s, 30s and early 40s who wants to have fun in a safe environment with people of a similar age is encouraged to look the group up by searching for ‘Social in St Albans – Millennials’ on the Meetup app.
Group organiser Hywel Farnhill said: “It was great to see so many people turn up for our birthday party. Everyone had a lot of fun and it was the perfect way to mark our tenth anniversary.
“What was especially enjoyable was seeing people who have been part of the group in the past but have since moved away. This group has created so many friendships and it was fantastic to rekindle some of them.
“As well as former members, we’re also interested in attracting new members. So if you’re between the ages of 20 and 40, look us up on the Meetup app.”
