I’m thrilled to welcome back the delightful cheese and wine pairings from Fleetville Larder.
During our conversation, Ed introduced me to some new additions that graced his collection over the summer months. And as always, there’s a captivating tale behind each bottle that finds its place in the Larder’s curated selection.
One such story is that of Gran Cerdo 2022 (£12.50 a bottle), which felt particularly fitting as we discussed the courageous journey from corporate life to entrepreneurship.
Winemaker Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba’s path to success was no less challenging.
Gran Cerdo Tempranillo’s label (which translates to Big Pig in Spanish) holds a story that resonates with many. It’s a tribute to the bank executives who once denied financial support, a loan, claiming that wine was not a seizable asset.
A bold response from the winemaker, Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, whose determination knew no bounds. Along with an image and definition of a pig, he added a note to the back label that reads: “One day, these greasy and sweaty corporate suits will find that the best things in life cannot be impounded. Thanks to our friends’ help, we were finally able to bottle this wine.”
I really hope this doesn’t discourage any local St Albans bankers from dropping by for a bottle!
Gonzalo Grijalba has developed a bit of a cult following. He’s hugely passionate about reclaiming the biodiversity of the earth he farms and has eschewed more commercial practices involving pesticides and herbicides for more biodynamic methods.
Organic (uncertified), vegan, and 100% tempranillo, this declassified Rioja displays a lovely cherry colour in the glass carries through to the nose along with other red fruit and cassis. Surprisingly juicy and acidic for the grape, this has excellent acidity and a soft, fruity palate. Fresh on the finish, with a bit of length. A great anytime red.
Gran Cerdo Tempranillo’s versatility makes it a delightful companion for various culinary delights. It’s medium-bodied nature and well-balanced acidity make it an excellent match for Spanish tapas, such as chorizo, patatas bravas, or Jamón Ibérico. The wine’s fruit-forward character also pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled vegetables, or aged cheeses, enhancing the flavours and creating a harmonious dining experience.
But given I was stood in a charming deli, surrounded by a vast array of cheeses, what else could be the most perfect pairing than Manchego PDO Gran Reserva 12M Maese Miguel?
The King of Spanish Cheeses, Manchego, is exclusively crafted from Manchega sheep’s milk. Its appearance features a caramel-colored rind with a zigzag pattern, called the ‘pleita’. There is also a wheat ear pattern on the top and bottom sides, known as the ‘espiga’.
The flavour is a perfect balance of lightness combined with sweet tones.
So, whether enjoyed on its own or paired with delectable Spanish cuisine, Gran Cerdo Tempranillo promises an enjoyable evening. Raise a glass, embrace the spirit of Spain, and savour the passion and artistry of Gran Cerdo Tempranillo. Salud!
