Ye Olde Fighting Cocks launches campaign to reopen Verulamium Park toilets

The public toilets in Verulamium Park.

More than 550 people have signed a petition calling for the reopening of public toilets in Verulamium Park instigated by nearby pub Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.

The loos closed last year, and SADC plans for a Community Toilet Scheme have yet to emerge. YOFC say the closure is placing a burden on their toilets due to the unavailability of public facilities, challenging their business operations and compromising hygiene standards and customer satisfaction.

They say it also negatively impacts individuals with specific needs such as pregnant women, elderly citizens, parents with young children and those with medical conditions that require frequent access to restroom facilities.

Respondent Adrian Gaskell fumed: “Visitors are spending a lot of money in St Albans – surely it’s not too much to ask to have a public toilet in a very busy park!”

Andy Lawrence said: “Just open them up again. it’ll stop people who get short defacating behind the building (which is what is happening now). These public conveniences are a basic but essential requirement for visitors to the park.”

Duncan MacTavish added: “Another summer of inaction. While the flooding of the park in recent years has led to increased costs, this should be no excuse for not maintaining an essential facility for the public.”
