If you have noticed an extra spring in the step of local men on Tuesday mornings, there is a good reason for it. Launched earlier this year by local choir director and vocal coach Tim Armstrong-Taylor, the Southdown Men’s Singing Group is flourishing, and the choir is now throwing open its doors to welcome new voices.
There are no auditions, no pressure, and absolutely no requirement to read music or have previous experience – just a desire to join in and have fun.
“Singing together isn’t about perfect notes – it’s about guys finding their voice side by side,” said choir member Brian Hocken. “We show up for the fun, stay for laughter, and leave feeling lighter, stronger, and more ourselves.”
Tim’s primary mission is simple: to get as many people singing together as possible, unlocking the profound mental and physical health benefits that group harmony brings.
“Singing is remarkably good for you, and doing it in a group creates a deep sense of belonging,” he explained. “The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and open to everyone.”
For the men involved, the weekly sessions at the Harpenden Trust have quickly grown into much more than a musical rehearsal.
Member David Raeside calls it an unmissable fixture in his schedule: “It’s fun, surprisingly good exercise, and a brilliant excuse for a bunch of blokes from all walks of life to get together. And when we sing – wow, what a glorious sound! Great coffee afterwards, too… what’s not to like?”
The Southdown choir forms part of the broader ‘Sing-with-Tim’ family, which includes mixed community groups and a women’s choir across Hertfordshire. Members get regular opportunities to team up for joint social events and local performances.
Locals can catch the group live in action on Saturday, September 5 at 12:30pm, when the choir takes to the music stage at the new Harpenden Festival.
Sessions are every Tuesday from 10.30am-noon at The Harpenden Trust Centre, followed by coffee, restarting on September 15.
