SADC planning enforcement officers are to investigate an illuminated sign installed on the frontage of a new takeaway shop in a Conservation Area following complaints from local residents.
The former home of Ellis Butchers at 149 Victoria Street received council approval in February 2026 to be converted into a hot food takeaway.
But when it opened last weekend many residents were shocked to see a brightly lit neon sign on the front of the new Sara Shawarma shop, especially as it did not include any such feature on its planning application.
Their design and heritage statement said: “As part of the refurbishment, attention has been given to ensuring that all changes are sympathetic to the existing building’s form and its surroundings.
“The facade, though modified for modern use, aligns well with the neighbouring properties, supporting the visual continuity of this notable St Albans thoroughfare.
Council officers stated: “The proposal would not have a significant impact on the historic character of the Conservation Area or the special Interest of the Locally Listed building and its contribution to the street scene along Victoria Street, particularly when considered against its commercial location and other similar development within the vicinity.”
