Based on the international bestselling book by Paula Hawkins – also adapted into a blockbuster DreamWorks film – The Girl on the Train now comes to the Abbey Theatre in St Albans as a gripping and suspenseful stage adaptation that will keep you guessing until the very final moments.
Rachel Watson longs for a better life just like the one she witnesses from the train window on her commute each morning and evening.
But when Rachel learns that the woman she has been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she is desperate to piece together what really happened.
Soon she finds herself in a disorientating world where memory is unreliable, obsession is relentless and truth lurks just out of reach. As suspects multiply and revelations build, tension escalates towards a truly devastating conclusion.
Director Maureen Bukht said she is delighted to have worked on this compelling drama: “It’s a fascinating story of love and loss on many different levels, with a tragically vulnerable protagonist pitted against ever-increasing levels of danger and foreboding.
“The cast and I have all relished the work to access the depths of the sub-text and the nuances of the play to bring out the characters and their various perspectives. Live theatre can offer immediate visceral impact for its audiences, and this play enables us to do that in spades.
“This is a modern play, reflecting modern life and all the injustices that we heap on each other. But it also reminds us that, despite the many things that divide us, we are all connected on some level, that we all have the power to build or destroy others according to how we treat them.”
Performances take place on the Main Stage from Friday June 12 to Saturday June 13 at 8pm, on Sunday June 14 at 2.30pm, and Wednesday June 17 to Saturday June 20 at 8pm.
