The Company of Ten is presenting a witty, fast moving production of The Taming of the Shrew in the Studio of the Abbey Theatre this month.
Shakespeare’s battle of the sexes is given a contemporary twist, providing a funny, fast-paced take on one of the Bard’s most provocative comedies.
At its heart, Taming of the Shrew is a story of clashing wills and shifting power. The Studio is perfect for the fresh, playful energy of this new staging that brings out the wit and humour of the play, while uncovering the more complex questions beneath its surface.
Blending original language with a modern perspective, the show invites audiences to rediscover one of Shakespeare’s most debated comedies.
Director Alison Wright explained: “I’ve been fascinated by Shrew for quite a while. I’ve probably seen more productions of this play than any of Shakespeare’s other works and have been struck by how different all those productions were.
“Shakespeare’s original storyline of spousal abuse is not something you can ‘play straight’ in the modern day, and I imagine that’s what encourages directors to take such varied
approaches. We’re using the play-within-a-play framework of the original – but with a different spin on it.
“It’s been a pleasure working with a talented cast, who have put in all the effort I asked for. I’m thrilled to see the play I’d imagined actually taking shape. In rehearsals, they’re making me laugh so much – and they’ll certainly make our audiences laugh too!”
Performances are from Friday May 15 to Saturday May 16 at 8pm, Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 at 2.30pm, and Tuesday May 18 to Saturday May 23 at 8pm. There is no performance on Monday May 18,
