Supporting Mental Health This May: The Power of Mindfulness

An introduction to mindfulness

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising understanding, reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations about mental wellbeing. In today’s fast-paced world, many people experience stress, anxiety and emotional challenges, making it more important than ever to prioritise mental health and ‘take action’ which is this year’s theme.

One simple yet effective approach to improving wellbeing is mindfulness.

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. It helps individuals step back from automatic thoughts and responses, fostering a more grounded and intentional way of engaging with everyday life. Research has shown that practising mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve focus and support emotional resilience in a wide range of contexts.

To support our community during Mental Health Awareness Month, we are pleased to offer a series of three weekly session mindfulness courses designed for people of all experience levels. These sessions will introduce practical techniques, guided meditations and strategies for managing everyday stress.

Delivered by Dawn Kett Psychotherapy in partnership with a St Albans-based mental health and wellbeing charity, It’s OK To Say, this programme forms part of a wider mission to make mental health support accessible and effective. The charity works closely with the community to provide inclusive, practical support and continues to expand its reach to help more people benefit from wellbeing initiatives.

Whether you are completely new to mindfulness or looking to deepen your practice, these courses provide a welcoming and supportive environment to learn valuable skills for maintaining mental wellbeing.

This May, we encourage everyone to take action and take a step towards better wellbeing and discover the benefits mindfulness can bring. If life feels busy, this course offers a place to pause. Open to adults aged 18 and over, this online course offers a supportive introduction to working more skilfully with thoughts, emotions and reactions.

The course runs online over three weeks, with sessions available on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm starting May 5, or Thursdays from 9am to 10am starting May 7. No prior experience is required. Each course is limited to eight participants per group so early booking is recommended.

Each course is kept to a small group enabling focused instruction, increased participation and a more supportive and effective learning environment. However, additional courses will run monthly if you are unable to secure a place on these courses, giving learners flexible opportunities to join at different times.

The course fee of £50 includes attendance at all three sessions, downloadable audio recordings of each session’s practices for you to keep and a workbook to support your practice at home.
