The Ministry of Truth announces a matter of cultural importance. The Company of Ten brings order to the Abbey Theatre Main Stage with George Orwell’s 1984.
A new stage adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 by Ryan Craig will soon appear before the public. Citizens are advised this production does not merely recount a story. It corrects memory. The Party has explained many times that memory is unreliable. Yet there remains a small, nagging question: if the past can be rewritten and memory corrected, how do you know if your thoughts are your own?
The Party says desire is weakness, privacy is treason, love is a distraction from loyalty. This production suggests the opposite. In a world where language is trimmed down, thoughts are corrected, and history is rewritten hourly, rebellion begins with something small. A diary. A touch. A sentence spoken out loud. Love.
Director Guy Conroy-Smith comments: “1984 still resonates as a warning against authoritarianism. This production pushes creative limits with a dynamic, transforming set. Actors balance suppressed truth with outward compliance, holding two realities at once, exploring how surveillance shapes public opinion, from identity politics to faith in leaders. Though widely known, the novel’s power lies in revealing both the resilience of the human spirit and what it takes to break it.”
