There are now four eggs in the Peregrine falcons’ nesting site at St Albans Cathedral.
The latest appeared yesterday to join a batch of three which appeared over the Easter weekend – the first time the falcons have produced this number since they started breeding at the site in 2022.
The first egg appeared just after midnight on April 1, with a second following on the morning of Good Friday, before female falcon Boudicca laid a third egg shortly after midnight on Easter Monday. The fourth egg arrived yesterday, Wednesday April 8.
Engagement Manager at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust Lea Ellis explained about the incubation process which is now underway: “The female will do most of the sitting, but the male plays an important role too – taking turns on the nest and bringing in food. While there may be times when the eggs are unattended, the pair will remain close by, guarding the nest.
“All being well, we can expect the chicks to hatch in around a month’s time.”
