Emmaus Hertfordshire is returning to St Albans city centre and opening a new charity shop.
Opening soon in the former Virgin Money bank in Lockey House, St Peter’s Street, the charity’s latest shop will stock an eclectic mix of restored and upcycled furniture from the Emmaus workshop, as well as clothing, homewares, handicrafts, small electricals, vinyls and vintage finds.
The opening, expected within the next few weeks, comes 20 months after its popular ‘Out of the Emmaus Workshop’ shop closed after three years of trading in the city
centre. The store showcased the restoration and upcycling work produced by the people the homelessness charity supports, known as companions.
The charity has now launched an appeal for volunteers with a desire to support its vital work to help sort, price and display quality preloved items in the large, modern
premises. For more details about volunteering, or to register your interest, visit: https://emmaus.org.uk/hertfordshire/support-us/volunteer/
Emmaus business development manager Gemma Beckett said: “It’s fantastic to be back in St Albans, and we’re delighted to have the keys to our new shop – our fifth in Hertfordshire. This wouldn’t have been possible without amazing local support. Particular thanks to MP Daisy Cooper and SADC, who have been so supportive in our search for new premises in the city centre, and to all our wonderful customers. We’re hugely grateful for the encouragement that brought us back here.
“The new shop will offer a diverse mix of second-hand, restored and upcycled items, along with a beautiful new range of handmade goods from our friends in Emmaus India – perfect for anyone looking for unique and ethically sourced gifts.
“From handmade baskets and reusable shopping and gift bags to silk shawls, cosmetic bags and much more, there will be something special for everyone.”
The charity’s latest shop will help fund its work helping companions with a home, individual support and meaningful work opportunities, preparing them for independent living and a brighter future.
Emmaus Hertfordshire is appealing for donations for the new shop. Where possible, it asks donors to drop-off items to any of its shops across the county. The charity
does offer a free collection service for donations of good quality furniture. To book a collection visit: https://emmaus.org.uk/hertfordshire/donate-goods/
