If there’s one thing St Albans does well, it’s kindness. You can feel it everywhere at this time of year – decorated postboxes, sparkly lights everywhere, packed-out community events, and the way people quietly look for ways to make December a little softer for those who need it. And when you’ve got ‘hugs’ in your strapline, well, it’s a given we’ll be getting involved.
Not just the cosy, arms-around-you kind hugs (though we are big fans of those), but the other sorts too – the giving, sharing, neighbourly kind of hug. The sort that says:
You’re part of this community. You’re not on your own. We’ve got you.
Which is why, once again, EYES on St Albans is acting as a collection point for the St Albans Community Pantry Christmas Hamper Appeal AND for St Albans Action for Homeless. The Pantry team, supported by volunteers across the city, will be creating festive food hampers for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity this winter.
These hampers don’t just provide essentials; they bring dignity, care and a little Christmas comfort to those who could really do with a lift.
If you’ve ever visited the Pantry or followed their work, you’ll know what a vital service they provide year-round. December is one of their busiest periods, and the
number of people needing help continues to rise. Without question, this year’s hamper collection really does matter.
We’re making it as easy as possible to help. Anytime the shop is open, you can pop in and drop off items for the hampers – things like toiletries, biscuits, tins, treats, hot
chocolate, savoury snacks, or any festive non-perishables that help create a proper seasonal spread.
If you’re not sure what to bring, just ask. No pressure, no fuss, no judgment – just a little space where you can make someone’s Christmas feel warmer.
You may have even caught the Pantry advert on the big screen at the Odyssey Cinema recently. Seeing a local charity showcased in such a beautiful venue has given the appeal a wave of extra visibility, and it’s been wonderful hearing customers say, “I saw it at the Odyssey, I’m bringing something in this week.” This is the St Albans ripple effect at its best.
And of course, while you’re in Marshalswick dropping off your bits for the hamper appeal, you’ll be right in the middle of a brilliant cluster of small independent businesses who would love your support. Grab a coffee, pick up some gifts, browse, chat, wander or just pop into the library for a book to snuggle up and read by the fire.
Marshalswick is full of little pockets of loveliness at this time of year. Every visit gives another small business a boost when it matters most.
Inside EYES, you’ll spot all the usual “festive cheer” – Jez may have even put the Christmas playlist on! He’ll doing his usual December juggling act of helping people get their new glasses before the Christmas break. Whilst the decorations may be understated, the shop will be warm, friendly and full of our usual mix of spex, hugs and rock’n’roll.
So if you’d like to give a hug this Christmas – the sort that reaches far beyond your own home – please do drop by with a donation for the Pantry hampers. You’ll be helping neighbours you may never meet, and making a real difference to families right here in our city.
