Fleetville restaurant Souvlaki City has been honoured by St Albans Action for Homeless with its Volunteer of the Year award, recognising those who go above and beyond for the charity.
Giving something back to their loyal customers – many of whom are neighbours from the immediate area – as well as the wider St Albans community, is at the heart of the restaurant’s ethos.
It has supported local schools like Fleetville and Mandeville with vouchers for raffles, and shown incredible generosity helping the work of Open Door and St Albans Action for Homeless.
During the pandemic Souvlaki City provided hot meals for users of Open Door night shelter, and although that service ended when Covid restrictions lifted, Giorgo “George” and Maria Nasso continued providing food for SAAFH.
Sharon Linney from SAAFH said: “It didn’t take us long to make a decision. George and Maria of Souvlaki City, Hatfield Road cook for our street friends once, sometimes twice a month. We know how hard it is to keep afloat at the moment and hospitality in particular is struggling so we really appreciate their commitment to our grass roots charity.
“So please shop local and pop down and try out some of their delicious Greek food, you won’t be disappointed.”
