Work on refurbishing Ver Meadows traveller site will get underway in the spring and finish a year after the devastating fire which resulted in the majority of the static and mobile homes being burned to the ground.
Residents were left homeless following the inferno at on July 12, which an independent investigation found was the result of human action such as cigarette ends, lit candles or a waste bin fire. The fire started on one plot but rapidly spread across the rest of the Redbourn site.
Campaigners believe that it was failings by Hertfordshire County Council that led to the fire, and held a protest rally outside HCC’s Stevenage offices in August demanding improvements to their standard of living.
This week an HCC spokesperson confirmed that work on refurbishing the site was now scheduled to begin.
“We have now completed the first part of the work, carefully clearing the site, carrying out detailed surveys into drainage and utilities and undertaking a full investigation into the existing retaining wall to make certain whether it is still safe. We have been working closely with planning teams to ensure that it meets the correct standards and supports our goal of getting the site ready for occupation as soon as we possibly can.
“We are currently in the process of selecting a contractor to carry out the refurbishment of the site. Works are scheduled to start in mid-March and finish by the end of July. We will be keeping tenants updated throughout the process.”
