Harpenden Local History Society wants residents past and present to tell them what day-to-day life was like in Harpenden some 60 years ago.
They’re keen to find out more about people’s experiences of living in the town during the 1960s. Memories will be published on the society’s website and a bottle of Champagne and local history books will be presented for the best submission.
Archivist David Kendall said: “For example, did you go to the Broadway Hall Market or the Regent, or any other, cinema? What was school like, and the shops, houses, discos, and the mini-skirt? Do you have any funny stories to tell?”
Harpenden History Society previously ran a competition in the 1970s for the best recollections of local life before the outbreak of the First World War. They received many entries and the current exhibition in the museum uses those to show what everyday life in Edwardian Harpenden was like.
Memories of life before the 1970s can be submitted by e-mail to archivist@harpenden-history.org.uk or by leaving them at the
Harpenden Museum in the Eric Morecambe Centre, Rothamsted Park. Alternatively, the Society can record your oral recollections and transcribe them; simply email archivist@harpenden-history.org.uk or tell one of the volunteers at the museum.
The deadline for sending in your memories is January 31.
