History, hands-on learning and design and technology came together as pupils at The Abbey CE VA Primary School had the opportunity to make their very own jam using grapes grown right on the school grounds.
The school site, once part of the Abbey orchard that supplied fruit to the Cathedral, still has some vines and pupils eagerly harvested the grapes themselves
Parent Lizzie Sitton generously gave up her time to help teacher Mrs Harley guide the children through the jam-making process as part of their DT learning.
Headteacher Linda O’Melia said: “From mixing and stirring to squashing the grapes the children threw themselves into every step with enthusiasm.
“The results were as delightful as the experience itself. The jam tasted simply delicious and many children were thrilled to sample their creations and take some home to share with their families.
“This project was not only a wonderful way for pupils to connect with the history of their school site but also a memorable DT experience that combined teamwork, creativity and, of course, a love of good food.”
