This November, the Abbey Theatre is inviting audiences to rediscover the magic of It’s a Wonderful Life — a timeless tale of love, hope, and second chances — reimagined for the stage in a captivating new production.
At the centre of the story is George Bailey, a man whose dreams of adventure and travel are continually put aside for the sake of others. When despair leads him to believe the world would be better off without him, his guardian angel Clarissa intervenes to reveal just how many lives he has touched — and how truly wonderful his own life has been all along.
This stage version beautifully translates the scope of the much-loved Hollywood classic into an intimate live experience. With some creative updates, Mary Elliot Nelson’s adaptation brings a fresh charm to a familiar story that celebrates the best of humanity.
Director Tina Swain said: “The play has been described by members of the cast as capturing the heart of the original film. I think this is the perfect way to explain how the scope of a much-loved Hollywood film has been adapted to a live stage production. Angel Clarence has become Clarissa, Uncle Billy is now Aunt Dilly, and the cast of 11 play more than 20 characters. It’s a real ensemble piece around the central character of George Bailey – but don’t expect any dance floors to turn into swimming pools in our production!”
This feel-good, family-friendly production promises to be the perfect way to step into the festive season. It’s a celebration of kindness, community, and the enduring power of hope — themes that resonate now more than ever.
Performances are from Friday November 14 to Saturday November 15 at 8pm, Sunday November 16 at 2.30pm, and Wednesday November 19 to Saturday November 22 at 8pm.
