Caped crusaders and masked marauders took to the streets on Sunday – taking part in The Great St Albans Challenge and raising more than £8,000 for local youth mental health charity Youth Talk.
Teams of families, friends, Scouts and local businesses including the St Albans Times joined the GPS-powered treasure hunt, navigating their way from St Albans Cathedral to the Alban Arena – all in support of free, confidential counselling for young people from across the district.
Adding to the fun, teams were challenged to spot Annie Brewster, the past Mayor of St Albans and previous High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, who appeared in full Batwoman costume! Participants had to track her down around the city centre, grab a selfie with her and find out what her superpower was.
The day culminated in a high-energy Grand Finale at the Arena hosted by David Jenkins, founder of Brilliant Film Academy, who crowned the Sopwell Superheroes as the overall winners.
Crowds were also treated to a live performance by platinum streaming artist and Youth Talk Ambassador Grace George, who shared her inspiring story of being supported by the charity.
Youth Talk chief executive David Barker said: “We’re absolutely thrilled by the incredible support at this year’s Great St Albans Challenge. The energy, enthusiasm and generosity of our community never cease to amaze me. Every penny raised will help Youth Talk provide free, confidential counselling for local young people who are struggling with their mental health.
“A huge thank you to everyone who took part, volunteered, or supported the event behind the scenes — helping to make it a day to remember. Events like this truly show just how much our city cares.”
Youth Talk also extended heartfelt thanks to the event headline sponsor Phoenix Construction and a host of other local businesses who supported this year’s challenge.
This year’s total of over £8,000 will fund around 160 vital counselling sessions, giving local young people a lifeline when they need it most.
