It’s been a busy week for filming in St Albans, with two different production teams operating across the city centre.
The first was in Verulamium Park on Thursday, where crews took over more than half of the car park, causing disruption to local businesses like Tick Tock Music in St Michael’s Church hall, and school coaches visiting the museum.
After a gentle word from SADC, they realised they had perhaps over-extended their prescence, and withdrew to the section of the car park they had actually booked.
SADC strategic director for community and place delivery Chris Traill said: “We occasionally suspend sections of our car parks to provide a base for filming companies.
“This is to ensure the district remains a favoured location for major film productions, providing a boost to the local economy and much-needed extra revenue for us.
“On this occasion, the filming company took up more of the car park than was agreed. Our staff attended as soon as we became aware and the company immediately apologised for the misunderstanding and moved all its vehicles into the correct space.
“This allowed scheduled school coach trips visiting Verulamium Park and Museum use of the car park and freed up more space for others.
“In suspending car parking bays, we always balance the interests of car park users with the need to facilitate filming and other activities. We also try to give people as much notice as possible about such suspensions.”
The crew was filming the second season of hit Netflix show ‘The Gentlemen’, based on the hit Guy Ritchie movie and starring Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings, with other cast members including Ray Winstone, Joely Richardson, and Giancarlo Esposito.
The comedy crime drama is also believed to have been filming on the Gorhambury estate over the past few days.
Meanwhile, film crews were also spotted at Books on the Hill and in the Cathedral orchard, shooting scenes for a crime drama called ‘Tommy & Tuppence’, a six part BritBox mini-series based on the Agatha Christie novels and short stories featuring the eponymous detective duo.
It stars Josh Dylan as Tommy and Antonia Thomas as Tuppence, plus Chizzy Akudolu – who appeared in the Alban Arena pantomime in 2021 – and Imelda Staunton, Sean Pertwee and Saffron Burrows.
Next week will see more filming in the city centre, with work on the first season of a new BBC comedy called ‘Ann Droid’ taking place outside the Music Department shop on the corner of Lattimore Road and London Road.
