EYES on living well, seeing well…

EYES on Living Well Seeing Well

Every year, National Eye Health Week reminds us of a simple truth: how we live has a direct impact on how we see. This year’s theme is “Live Well, See Well”, and it is the perfect invitation to think about the everyday habits that keep our eyes in good shape – as well as our general wellbeing.

A walk in the park
Here in St Albans, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to green space. A stroll through Highfield Park is not just a chance to stretch your legs; it is also great for your eyes. Looking into the distance instead of at a screen gives them a much-needed rest, and natural light
helps regulate sleep patterns which are vital for healthy vision. Keep an eye out for the orchards too – the park hosts its annual Apple Day on October 5, celebrating seasonal produce that does your body and your eyes the world of good. Apples are rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, which support eye health.

Stay topped up
Another simple tip is to keep well hydrated. Dehydration can leave eyes feeling dry, gritty, or tired. Luckily, St Albans is part of the Refill scheme (refill.org.uk), which means many cafés, shops, and public spaces will happily refill your water bottle. It is free, good for the environment, and another easy way to keep eyes comfortable all day long.

Sunglasses: not just for summer
One myth we hear time and again is that sunglasses are only for hot, sunny days. In reality, UV rays are present all year round, even in autumn and winter, and they can contribute to long-term eye conditions. At EYES on St Albans, we stock Porsche Sunglasses for those who
like sleek, modern design, and we can also make any frame into sunglasses with high-quality lenses. Whether you want style, protection, or both, it is worth thinking about sunglasses as part of your everyday eye-care kit.

Food for thought
Diet plays a huge role in eye health. Foods rich in Omega-3 (like oily fish), lutein (found in leafy greens), and antioxidants (from colourful fruit and veg) can help protect against age-related conditions. Adding these to your weekly shop – whether from the local market or one of the city’s excellent farm shops – is another way of living well to see well.

And of course – regular EYES examinations
Lifestyle choices matter, but so does regular professional care. At EYES on St Albans, we believe eye tests are not just about reading letters on a chart; they are about looking after your long-term health. Routine checks can spot changes early, from dry eye to glaucoma, and give you peace of mind that your vision is supported for the future.

See the difference
So think about how small steps – a walk in any of our lovely parks, topping up your water bottle, adding more leafy greens to your plate, or popping on sunglasses – can make a big difference. Live well, and you really will see well. And if you need a little extra support, we’re here, on the sunny side of the Quadrant.
