When it comes to fundraising, few organisations do it better than Spotlight on Africa. The Harpenden-based charity has been making a difference since 2007, and their latest event was a true testament to their passion and community spirit.
Dedicated trustee Wendy Houson was hands-on in organising a charity abseil down the tower of Harpenden’s oldest church. Built in the 1200s, St Nicholas’ church has stood for centuries as a place of support for those in need, making it a fitting backdrop for such an inspiring initiative.
The day was filled with memorable moments. One of the most heartwarming was the effort of Ethan, a seven-year-old student, who, with the help of his mum, raised an impressive £800 towards the £10,000 total collected on the day. The event united people of all ages: even the rector Father Patrick Moriarty descended the tower in his flowing robes, while the oldest participant, an 80-year-old Rotarian from the St Albans Verulamium Club, fearlessly took on the challenge.
From its humble beginnings in 2007, when its very first project supported the Spotlight on Africa Primary School in Mbale, Uganda (then operating in temporary accommodation), the charity has grown into a vital force for change.
Today, Spotlight on Africa’s mission is clear: “To provide a holistic approach to protect children and young people, empowering the village communities that raise them to sustainably lift whole communities out of poverty.”
