A delegation of eight young environmental campaigners hand-delivered 1,369 signatures to Tesco HQ calling on the supermarket giant to ban magazines that carry pointless plastic toys and wrapping.
The Green House Climate Club also delivered letters addressed to Tesco CEO Ken Murphy from primary schools across St Albans and Harpenden.
Tricia Gibbons, director of St Albans-based The Green House, a community led project set up to promote sustainability, protect local wildlife, and reduce our carbon footprint, said: “The Climate Club is about active change, and hand-delivering the Kids Against Plastic Tat petition to Tesco Headquarters was always in the plan. The young activists were thrilled to be able to walk with purpose from Welwyn Garden City bus station to Tesco HQ and be greeted by Tony McElroy, head of campaigns for Tesco plc.”
This followed on from a visit from MP Daisy Cooper earlier this summer, where the Climate Club shared their growing concern about the impact of cheap, plastic tat flooding the children’s magazine market.
“Our inspiring, young activists were thrilled to learn that their MP had tabled an Early Day Motion in support of the campaign,” added Nilima Willis, school liaison officer.
“Alongside being met by a senior member of Tesco plc, this demonstrates real active hope for our young people.”
