The winner of one of the toughest photographic competitions in the local area has been named.
Harpenden Photographic Society’s Photographer of the Year for the 2022/2023 season is six-time winner Paul Johnson.
The society, now in its 87th year, holds five internal competitions throughout the season, where HPS members enter colour prints, monochrome prints or digital projected images (DPI).
The top scoring images in each competition, as determined by an external judge, are awarded points which cumulatively count towards a final score total for each participating member.
Individual category winners were: Colour print – Malcolm Jenkins; Monochrome print – Paul Johnson and Tim Tate (joint winners); Digital projected image – Peter Stevens.
Based on accumulated points across all three categories in the five image competitions, the overall Photographer of the Year was Paul Johnson.
Paul, who is also vice chair of HPS, has successfully held the Photographer of the Year title on five previous occasions:
“There were some incredible images entered throughout the year by the many members that participated in the annual competition, and so I am extremely proud to have achieved this accolade for the sixth time.”
Society chair Steve Collins added: “Although this was another tightly fought competition year, with incredible images being submitted by members into the various rounds, it became apparent early on that Paul was going to be the one to beat this year.
“A thoroughly well-deserved win. I’d also like to congratulate all of the category winners and runners-up, who contributed such exceptional images this season. ”
The club also held two additional annual challenges: Panel of Three – winner Brian Cooke; and Audio Visual (AV) – winner Richard Greenaway.
The most-loved images of HPS’s recent public exhibition, as voted for by visitors to the event, have also been announced.
Each member of the public is able to vote for their three favourite images out of over 180 print images on display.
The winners were: 3rd: TIME FOR A DRINK by Ali Asplin; 2nd: SELF EMPLOYED by Tim Tate; 1st: WONDERMENT by Tom Couch.
Members of the public are encouraged to join Harpenden Photographic Society, when it begins its new season on Tuesday September 5.
