Former Argos site in Spencer Street could become residential development

The former Argos in Spencer Street.

A prime city centre space which has sat empty for years could be redeveloped into housing.

The former Argos premises at 5 Spencer Street has seen various schemes proposed over the years, but none have reached fruition.

The current proposal, by developers Denton Homes, would apparently see the building demolished and replaced with 47 flats, and although a detailed application has yet to be submitted to SADC Denton is applying for planning and listed building consent.

A public notice on the proposals called for the demolition of the existing commercial building, and the redvelopment of the site – including land to the rear of 25-37 Market Place – to provide a residential development comprising 47 apartments, as well as cycle parking, refuse storage and hard and soft landscaping.
