How would you like your name etched onto a statue being commissioned to recognise the legacy of the Second World War’s famous fighting plane – the Spitfire?
The National Spitfire Project is an initiative to build a structure the size of Nelson’s column at the Woolston Works in Southampton – where the first planes were made.
Spitfire pilots are rightly remembered for their pivotal role in the Battle of Britain, but until now there has been no specific, national commemoration of the aircraft in which they flew.
However, just as the stories of ‘the few’ have proved a source of inspiration, it is hoped the National Spitfire Monument will embody the courage of all those who built, trained on, flew, and maintained this enduring British icon.
Alastair Gibson, one of the featured artists at Molasses House art gallery in Harpenden, has been commissioned by the NSP to help raise money for the project.
One of his Spitfire sculptures is now on display in the gallery for people to see and place a pre-order.
Gallery owner Barrie Woolston (pictured) said: “From each sale £2,000 gets donated to the NSP and the buyer gets to have their name – or a family member associated with the Spitfire – etched into the final structure forever as a lasting legacy.”
