A St Albans primary school will be prohibiting the use of mobile phones by parents and carers anywhere on the school site from the start of the autumn term.
Fleetville Junior School in Hatfield Road has introduced the ban for drop-offs and pick-ups, but also events like sports day and plays.
They say the decision aligns with the growing Smartphone Free Childhood movement, which highlights the importance of encouraging more mindful, present interactions.
Headteacher Clare Whitehouse said: “As educators, we are asking parents and carers to lead by example, helping us foster an environment that prioritises face-to-face engagement and supports children’s emotional and social development.
“We understand that some parents may find this change disappointing, particularly at times when you would like to capture special moments. Please be assured that for school events such as plays, assemblies, and other performances, we will take high-quality recordings and share them with families via a secure, private link. This allows you to enjoy the moment in real time while ensuring all children are safeguarded and that no images or videos are shared inappropriately.
“Our first priority is always the safety and well-being of our pupils. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support in making our school a safer and more focused place for everyone.”
