A new initiative aims to highlight the fascinating history behind some of St Albans’ most interesting buildings.

The St Albans and District Heritage window stickers campaign kicks off in George Street on Saturday (June 21) at 12.30pm and forms part of the Alban Day celebrations.

Window stickers similar to the city’s Blue Plaques scheme have been prepared listing past uses and occupants of almost all of the buildings in George Street.

The 25 stickers include information on long-lost inns and hostelries like The White Horse, The Bear (also known as The Bull), and The Tabard (later The Antelope).

John Morewood, president of St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural And Archaeological Society (SAHAAS) explained: “St Albans and District Heritage is an initiative, currently led by SAHAAS but planned to include more like minded organisations, which is aiming to raise money for Heritage related expenditure.

“This body’s vision would be to transform the St Albans district into: a place where its heritage is better preserved for future generations, somewhere more of its heritage is brought into public view, and somewhere local people and visitors can more easily find out about its heritage. George Street is the first initiative in this respect.

“Businesses, residents, St Albans BID and SAHAAS have worked together to achieve something at low cost which aims to enrich the experience of people visiting George Street.”
