In the heart of St Albans, a powerful collaboration is quietly transforming lives. The Pioneer Club Youth Charity – already a cornerstone of youth culture with its iconic skatepark and music venue – has joined forces with Vista Support Services to launch the Step Forward programme, a free weekly drop-in group for families navigating the challenges of school avoidance.
Held every Wednesday during term time from 1-3pm at the Pioneer Youth Club on Heathlands Drive, Step Forward offers a safe, welcoming space for children aged five and up who are experiencing anxiety around attending school. Parents and guardians are invited to attend alongside their children, creating a holistic support environment that fosters connection, understanding, and resilience.
The sessions are led by experienced professionals from Vista, including a family support worker and a behaviour support practitioner.
While parents receive advice and guidance, children can engage in arts and crafts, gaming, and other creative activities designed to build rapport and encourage social interaction. The goal is simple but profound: to reduce school avoidance behaviours, empower families with practical strategies, and help children reconnect with learning and community life.
Founded in 2011, Vista Support Services is a trusted educational organisation that works with numerous schools across St Albans.
Their mission is to support children, young people, and families through emotional wellbeing services and early intervention.
Vista offers a wide range of support including parenting courses, counselling, mentoring, and behaviour support. Their team is known for their warmth, compassion, and deep commitment to helping families navigate difficult times with dignity and hope.
As part of the Step Forward programme, Vista’s staff are on hand each week to offer one-to-one advice and signposting. Their presence ensures that families not only feel heard but are actively supported in building resilience, improving school connections, and developing strategies to manage anxiety and stress in both home and school settings.
The initiative is part of a broader vision at the Pioneer Club, which has been a safe haven for young people since 1941. Under the leadership of Programme Director Sarah Dyer, the club has expanded its charitable offerings to meet the evolving needs of the community. From SEND activity groups to youth-led volunteering groups and holiday camps for children on free school meals, the Pioneer’s programming reflects a deep commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and grassroots impact.
The club’s ethos is clear: every ticket bought, every coffee sipped in the Suet Yard café, and every venue hire feeds directly back into programmes like Step Forward, creating a circular model of community support.
As Vista director Karen Broom puts it: “We believe that every child deserves the support, tools, and environment they need to flourish—both in and outside of school”. With Step Forward, the Pioneer Club and Vista are making that belief a reality, one Wednesday at a time.”
