A police investigation is underway following reports of illegal digging in Verulamium Park – a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Because the park encompasses a substantial portion of the Roman city of Verulamium, it is given legal protection against activities that could damage the site, ensuring the preservation of its archaeological and historical significance.
But evidence has been found which suggests digging has been taking place in the park, possibly involving the use of a metal detector, in a bid to discover buried artefacts.
St Albans Museums have released a statement relating to the alleged offence: “St Albans Museums is aware of the illegal digging that took place in Verulamium Park last week. The park is a protected Scheduled Ancient Monument and unauthorised digging in the area is a serious offence which can lead to criminal prosecution.
“The police are aware and are currently investigating. Due the ongoing investigation we are unable to comment further.
